Birthday invitation ideas for kids and adults (with lines to copy)

A birthday invite has one job before anything else: get people excited enough to keep the date free. The second job is making sure they turn up at the right place, at the right time, knowing whether to bring a swimsuit.

Here are ideas that do both, sorted by the kind of birthday you’re throwing, with message lines you can lift straight into your invite.

What every birthday invite needs

  • Whose birthday, and which one. “Aarav turns 5” is better than “Birthday party”.
  • Date, start time and end time. For kids’ parties, the end time matters more than you think — parents plan pickups around it.
  • Venue with a map link. Especially for society clubhouses and restaurants with confusing entrances.
  • Theme or dress code, if any.
  • RSVP date, so you can order the right number of return gifts.
  • Gift policy, if you have one. “Your presence is the present” is fine to say — people appreciate the clarity.

Kids’ birthday ideas

For kids, the invite is the first part of the party. Children love the moment of opening something, so an invite that has to be scratched, tapped or unwrapped gets watched again and again (and shown to the whole class). Theme ideas that work well:

  • Scratch-to-reveal: the age or the theme hides under a scratch card. Simple and kids adore it.
  • Superhero or space mission: “Mission briefing” wording, with the party as the mission.
  • Jungle, dinosaurs or under the sea: easy themes for decor and return gifts too.
  • Carnival: games stalls, popcorn, tickets — the invite can be a ticket.
  • Mini-games inside the invite: a quick game for kids to play before the party builds the hype.

First birthday ideas

The first birthday is really a party for the parents, the grandparents and everyone who survived the first year with you. The baby will remember none of it, and that’s fine.

  • Use a month-by-month photo strip — a digital invite can hold twelve photos without becoming a collage nobody can read.
  • Write it in the baby’s “voice”. Cheesy, yes. Universally loved, also yes.
  • Keep timings baby-friendly: a lunch party works better than a 9 pm dinner for a one-year-old who naps at 2.
  • If there’s a puja or a cake-cutting at a fixed time, mention it so grandparents arrive for the important bit.

The 30th (and other big ones for grown-ups)

The 30th invite is allowed to be self-aware. Lean into the jokes about back pain, being in bed by eleven, and the sudden interest in mutual funds. Ideas:

  • Decade theme: 90s Bollywood, 2000s pop, whatever decade the birthday person grew up in.
  • “Dirty thirty” or “flirty thirty” — know your audience before you pick.
  • A dinner, not a party: smaller list, nicer restaurant, longer conversations.
  • A weekend away: for friend groups who need a reason to actually make the Goa plan happen.

Surprise party ideas

Surprise invites are mostly about logistics. Say clearly that it’s a surprise, ask people to arrive early, and tell them where to park so the birthday person doesn’t spot fifteen familiar cars outside.

  • Put “SHHH — it’s a surprise” right at the top, not hidden in the details.
  • Give two times: guest arrival time and the birthday person’s arrival time.
  • Send it to guests one by one, not in a group the birthday person might be added to by accident.
  • Name a point person for questions, so nobody messages the birthday person “what time is your party?”

Milestone birthdays for parents and grandparents

A 50th, 60th or 75th is often organised by the children, which changes the voice: it’s an invitation from the family, written with affection. For a 60th, some families also hold a puja or a shashtipoorti ceremony — mention the ritual timing if guests are welcome.

Parent’s 60th

Sixty years of [name]: their laughter, their cooking, their unshakeable opinions. Join the family to celebrate on [date], [time], at [venue].

Grandparent · Hindi Hindi

हमारे प्रिय [नाम] जी के 75वें जन्मदिन के शुभ अवसर पर आप सपरिवार सादर आमंत्रित हैं। [तारीख़], [समय], [स्थान]।

Sending it

A birthday invite does best sent one-to-one, a week or two ahead for casual parties and three to four weeks for big milestones. Follow with one reminder the day before. The same rules from our WhatsApp invite etiquette guide apply — just with fewer aunties to keep happy. Hosting around the festive season? Our Diwali party messages have plenty of party lines too.
