Reception invitation wording

Reception wording is a little different from the main wedding card. The couple are already married, so the invitation is to celebrate them rather than to witness the ceremony — and the hosts are often the groom's parents or the couple themselves.

Here are reception wordings for the common situations, from formal to relaxed. Copy one into a reception invitation template and adjust the names.

Phrases that work for receptions

  • "Request the pleasure of your company at the reception of…"
  • "In celebration of the marriage of…"
  • "Join us for dinner in honour of the newly married…"
  • "Bless the newlyweds" — warm and traditional
  • "Dinner, drinks and dancing to follow" — sets expectations

Situations that need a careful line

After a destination or intimate wedding, acknowledge it simply: "we were married in a small ceremony in Goa and would love to celebrate with you." After a court marriage, there's no need to explain — "we're married!" says it all. For a late reception months after the wedding, mention the wedding date so it doesn't read like a new wedding.
